Governance For New Mobility Services in Post-Covid19 World (GECKO H2020)

The current pandemic is affecting the public-private interface of the urban mobility ecosystem. The need for social distancing has made group transportation typically provided publicly, particularly risky, thus opening the space for the growth of individualized forms of mobility sharing (especially dockless e-scooters and bicycles). At the same time, multiple markets for goods and services have begun to rely on private providers of contactless delivery. Within the original focus of GECKO on regulatory schemes enabling the implementation of disruptive technologies and business models in transport systems, the researchers at Bocconi will focus on adaptations necessitated by the pandemic. This will entail a cross-jurisdictional comparison of ways in which public governance can be supportive of the versatile response of private mobility providers – such as immediate remaking of the system of road signs, expansion of pedestrian and cycling routes as well as setting up of a robust framework for data sharing and mobility integration within Mobility-as-a-Service, that could help avoid overcrowding through real-time prediction of the activity of commuters.
